G6

2005 Pontiac G6Debuting for 2005, the midsize G6 is being marketed as a true sports sedan, and promises enhanced performance and sophistication over its predecessor, the Grand Am. (While the G6 replaces the Grand Am, the latter will remain on sale for a time during 2005.) The G6 is built on General Motors' global "Epsilon" platform, which also provides the basis for the utilitarian Chevrolet Malibu/Malibu Maxx and sporty Saab 9-3. This gives it a wheelbase that's about two inches longer than the Grand Am's, which should translate into a smoother and more-secure ride. Base and GT models come powered by a 200-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6, while a top GTP model offers a high-output 3.9-liter V-6 that uses variable valve timing and active air intake technology to produce 240 horsepower. A new 2.4-liter 170-horsepower "Ecotec" four-cylinder powerplant will also be offered, beginning later in the model year. A four-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift mode comes standard, and an all-new six-speed manual is alternately available in GT and GTP models. A two-door coupe version will be added to the line by spring of 2005, with a convertible model to follow when the weather turns warm.
